SRS CONCERT SERIES-DETAILS FOR MUSICIANS
WHAT IS THE SRS CONCERT SERIES?
The SRS Concert Series is a 3-4 song live performance video filmed at Stressboy Records Studio in West Seattle. The goal is to give bands and individual artists the opportunity to show fans how they sound in a quality live environment. The long term goal is to make the SRS Concert Series a place where musicians, fans, booking agents, and venues can go to check out local bands.
COST
This is a free project. Stressboy Records is a non-profit entity. I do this because I love music, and want to help bands succeed. This is my way of giving back to the music community, sharing my expertise in audio & video, and I want to have fun and work with other great musicians! Some bands insist on donating some money. It is not expected in any way. If you choose to donate, I will not accept anything over $500. I will also not accept any money until the entire project is completed and posted to YouTube.
PROCESS
If, after meeting each other, we decide to film an SRS Concert, we agree on a date. Here’s is a rough schedule:
1st hour - load in and set up
2nd hour - dial in the sound, and run through a bunch of songs to get comfortable
3rd hour - roll the tape and cameras (30 minutes max), and break down.
EQUIPMENT
Please watch and listen to a few of the SRS Concert videos out there to get a feel for sound before digging deep into the equipment notes.
Drums - I supply the drum kit. I use a Pearl Master Series Maple Pure 6.5x14 snare. The cymbals are Zildjian Custom Dark. I also have a set of 1950s Zildjian A HHs for light hitters. Feel free to bring your own snare and cymbals if you prefer. I use a hybrid kit method for recording.
Bass - I have a Zoom B3 interface set up as an Ampeg SVT with 8x10” speaker cab. This is a great final piece in the signal chain. Feel free to bring any pedals and FX if this is essential for your sound.
Guitar - Bring your own amp or use one of mine (Mesa Roadster, Marshall TSL - 602). I use Two-Notes Capture hardware in place of micing a cabinet. I have 2 of these devices. I also have a Quad Cortex if you are looking for something else.
Vocals - I use SM57s and SM58s for vocals. If you prefer, you can bring your own mic but keep in mind that we want to minimize spill into vocal mics, so a cardioid polar pattern is essential.
SONG SELECTION
Please make sure you have your 3-4 song set. Share the songs with me a week before filming so I can learn the arrangement. This really helps during filming.
FILMING
I use 5 cameras to film. 3 static cameras, one camera on a slider above the drum kit, and one mobile camera to tie everything together. By the time we start filming, you’ll be comfortable with me moving around in the room. My goal is to be invisible as you’re performing. For acoustic acts and individual artists, I also offer a “White Room” option (see below).
